This baroque church was built between 1589 and 1606 on the site of the former SS. Ambrogio chapel, which served as the see for Milanese bishops seeking refuge in Genoa following the invasion of the Lombards between 569 and 645.

The importance of this building particularly lies in the two canvasses by the Flemish painter Rubens, both of which date back to 1622: The Circumcision, placed above the altar, and The Miracles of St Ignatius, located in the third chapel.
